The West African Regional Office is hosted at the Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in Nigeria

NASRDA was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in April 1999 with six operational centres. The Agency is charged with the mandate to consolidate all Space Science and Technology related activities in order to make a greater impact on developmental efforts in Nigeria. It pursues the development and application of space science application and technology for the socio-economic benefits of the nation.

CBSS is one of the six activity centres of NASRDA. It is charged with the responsibility of conducting fundamental research in Space Science (from Astronomy to Atmospheric Sciences), as well as coordinating such research activities in our Universities and Research Institutes. It was established in 2001, with the temporary site at the Univeristy of Nigeria; the centre has its fenced permanent site also in Nsukka.

The primary aim of the centre is to initiate and foster the growth of Basic Space Research in Nigeria in a highly coordinated manner in collaboration with NASRDA Centres, Network of International Partners in advanced countries, Nigerian Universities, Educational Institutions, Government Research Institutes and the Private sector such as NIMET, Nigerian Telecommunications, Radio and TV Broadcasting.
